UEFA Executive Committee

The UEFA Executive Committee is UEFA's supreme executive body. It comprises the UEFA president and 15 other members elected by a UEFA Congress.

Members and vice-presidents
The Executive Committee does not include more than one representative of the same UEFA member association, and each Executive Committee member holds an active office within his member association. The Executive Committee elects a first, second, third, fourth and fifth vice-president, one of whom is chairman of the Finance Committee. The president is entitled to propose candidates.

Term of office
The term of office of the president and Executive Committee members elected by a Congress is four years. Eight members, or seven members and the president, are elected every two years. All members are eligible for re-election. A person aged 70 or more is not eligible for election or re-election. If a vacancy occurs, the next Ordinary Congress elects a replacement for the remaining term of office. If the vacancy occurs in the final year of a term of office, no replacement is elected.

Powers
The Executive Committee is empowered to make decisions on all matters which do not fall within the legal or statutory jurisdiction of the UEFA Congress or another organ. The Executive Committee manages UEFA, except to the extent that it has delegated such management, or unless such management has been delegated by the UEFA Statutes to the UEFA president or the UEFA administration.

Duties
The Executive Committee has the following untransferable duties:
– overall control of UEFA and the issuing of necessary instructions;
– definition of the organisational structure;
– form and supervision of the book-keeping;
– election of two internal auditors and the issuing of their terms of reference;
– appointment of the general secretary and deputy general secretary upon the proposal of the president;
– dismissal of the general secretary and deputy general secretary upon the proposal of the president, or by a decision supported by two-thirds or more of all members of the Executive Committee;
– overall supervision of the UEFA administration, including the general secretary and deputy general secretary, especially in terms of observance of laws, the Statutes, regulations and orders; approval of the annual business plan of the UEFA administration;
– compilation of a written report for presentation to the Ordinary Congress;
– examination of the administration's report to the Ordinary Congress.

The Executive Committee may delegate the preparation and implementation of its decisions or the supervision of business to one or more of its members. The committee is also authorised to delegate management, either fully or partly, to the president, to one or more of its members and/or to the UEFA administration.

Meetings
As a general rule, the Executive Committee meets once every two months, and is convened by the president. The president may invite third parties to attend meetings of the Executive Committee in an advisory capacity. The committee has a quorum of half plus one of its voting members, including the president or, in his absence, a vice-president.

Decisions
Executive Committee decisions come into immediate force, unless the Executive Committee decides otherwise. An Executive Committee member or the president does not take part in the deliberation of any matter or point of issue involving the member association and/or a club affiliated to the member association with which he is associated, or in any case in which a conflict of interest exists.

Al Jazeera Sport buys broadcast rights to 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups™

(FIFA.com) Wednesday 26 January 2011

FIFA is pleased to announce the extension of its broadcast rights agreement with Al Jazeera Sport for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ and the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™. The agreement is the first to be signed in FIFA’s media rights distribution process for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups™ and, coming just a few weeks after the host country announcement in December, is testimony to the enduring appeal of the world’s most-watched event.

The agreement with the Qatar-based TV channel covers cable, satellite, terrestrial, mobile and broadband internet transmission across 23 territories and countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Moreover, Al Jazeera Sport has made a commitment to FIFA that the matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be widely accessible for football fans across the Middle East and North Africa.

Al Jazeera Sport has been a FIFA licensee since 2009 and this new extension of the rights means that the channel can now tailor its programming over three consecutive FIFA World Cups. Al Jazeera Sport has committed to unprecedented presence and production levels from the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ onwards, including free TV coverage as agreed between the two parties and in line with FIFA distribution policies.

“Al Jazeera Sport more than proved its commitment to delivering high-calibre coverage to football fans during the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. FIFA’s aim is to make the World Cup as accessible to as many people around the world as possible – and for this we thankfully have an immensely strong partner in Al Jazeera Sport for the Middle East and North Africa,” said Jérôme Valcke, FIFA Secretary General.

“We are very excited about this deal as it is great news for football fans throughout the Middle East and Northern Africa who will now be guaranteed the very best programming of the world’s most followed sports event,” said Nasser Al Khelaifi, General Manager of Al Jazeera Sport.

The territories covered by this agreement are: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, UAE, Yemen and the territory of Palestine.

Women’s round-up: January 2011

Women’s round-up: January 2011
(FIFA.com) Monday 31 January 2011

The elite of women’s football received global recognition, major international stars were on the move, while USA added more silverware to an already bulging trophy cabinet. FIFA.com reflects on all this and more in reviewing another fascinating month in women’s football.

Club Football
Marta signing boosts WPS debutants
The newest Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) team, Western New York Flash, secured a major coup with the signing of five-time FIFA World Player of the Year, Marta. The Brazilian superstar, who has won the WPS golden boot in both seasons of the league’s short existence, linked up with the club after former club FC Gold Pride withdrew for the upcoming season. The 2011 edition of the six-team competition will commence in April.

German starlet on the move
Marta was not the only major signing over the last month, with German prodigy Kim Kulig set to make the shift from Bundesliga outfit Hamburger SV to powerhouse club 1. FFC Frankfurt this summer. The 20-year-old defensive midfielder, who was a driving force for Germany in their FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup triumph on home soil last year, is expected to be a starter in Silvia Neid's line-up at Germany 2011.

Sky Blues crowned again
Sydney FC have secured the Australian W-League Premiership by finishing the regular league season three points clear of nearest rivals Brisbane Roar. The Sydneysiders were by far the top-scoring team, with youngster Kyah Simon well clear at the top of the league’s goalscoring chart. The Sky Blues now progress to the four-team finals series alongside the Roar, Canberra United and Melbourne Victory.

International Football
Female elite recognised
Brazil’s Marta continued her record streak of success by claiming a fifth consecutive FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award at the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala in Zurich earlier this month. The WPS player of the season was a clear winner ahead of Germany duo Birgit Prinz and Fatmire Bajramaj. German national team coach Silvia Neid claimed the inaugural FIFA World Coach of the Year for Women’s Football in front of Germany U-20 coach Maren Meinert and USA’s Pia Sundhage. Finally, the FIFA Fair Play Award was given to the Haiti U-17 women’s team, who, despite a devastating earthquake in their homeland, managed to reach the final round of the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Further honours for USA
USA won the 2011 Four Nations Tournament in China for the seventh time despite suffering a 2-1 loss to Sweden in their opening match. The Stars and Stripes won their final outing 2-0 against China to finish ahead of North American rivals Canada on the teams' head-to-head record, with the hosts in third. Carli Lloyd and Amy Rodriguez scored the all-important goals in the final match, while Nicole Barnhart - who continues to deputise for the injured Hope Solo - was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper.

Development
January was highlighted by a coaching course in the Caribbean nation of St Kitts and Nevis in what was an unusually quiet period in FIFA development news over the Christmas/New Year period. Earlier in December, a development course took place in Serbia, while a Consultancy Mission was sent to Paraguay.

The stat
352 – The number of caps accrued by the legendary Kristine Lilly, with the USA midfielder announcing her retirement early in January at the age of 39. Not only is the appearances tally a record in men’s and women’s football, Lilly also scored 130 internationals goals and figured in all five editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup™.

The quote
"Kim (Kulig) belongs to the players in Germany who impress thanks to her footballing quality, but also thanks to her charisma and her self-confidence. She is a symbol of the new generation of women's football in Germany", 1. FFC Frankfurt athletic director Siggi Dietrich.

Learning the multiplication table can be tiresome for some kids. I remember when I was the one endlessly memorizing numbers, it can be such a heavy load on the brain. I knew that for my kids, memorizing the multiplication table would not be so easy as well. Not only that, recalling all the facts that they memorized can also be a challenge. I am pretty sure that many children still struggle with their multiplication tables.

Now, thanks to City Creek Press, who produced the Times Alive! software, children can now learn their times tables the fun and easy way. Times Alive! is based on the award-winning book Times Tables the Fun Way! by Judy Liautaud and Dave Rodriguez. My review will focus on the instant download software of Times Alive!

First of all, it was very easy to download and install the software to my PC. It did take a day or two for the download link to be sent to my email after I ordered, but I did not encounter any problems in downloading and installation.

The software opens with a warning that only kids who want to have fun should use it. That immediately draws in the user to find out how learning the times tables can be fun. It has 18 lessons in all where all the most difficult multiplication facts are taught. Each lesson has a short story that they can listen to as well as read along. Following the story is a song that will further cement the fact in the child’s memory. Then there are interesting games and quizzes for the child.

Above is a sample of the song that makes learning their multiplication facts really interesting. For more samples, please visit their youtube page here.

MY THOUGHTS

I had both Guitar Babe and Artsy Princess work on Times Alive! 15 year old Guitar Babe found the activities to be geared towards the younger ages BUT she did say that the way it was taught was all so annoyingly clever. Being a lover of music, she also admired how the songs included a hook, which will literally “hook” the listener to remember the songs. She said all this with a note of admiration in her voice.

Artsy Princess worked on the Times Alive! longer than Guitar Babe. She has been doing it by herself. I told her to listen to the whole lesson two times before moving on to the next lesson. At this point, she’s done until Lesson 8 and has now memorized all the facts that she went through. She said that she feels that it’s too young for her BUT that she learned a lot. She finds the games and quizzes most interesting of all. When I checked her quizzes, I did see that with every lesson, her grades have gone up continuously.

As for me, I am SOLD on the Times Alive! software. It should be a part of everyone’s homeschool and classroom because it makes learning about the multiplication tables fun and easy.

Note: I received this software for free in exchange for a review as part of the TOS Homeschool Crew. I am not required to write a positive review

Madrid and Marseille lose ground in title reckoning

Madrid and Marseille lose ground in title reckoning
Published: Monday 31 January 2011, 0.55CET
Real Madrid CF face a seven-point gap to leaders FC Barcelona in Spain after a 1-0 defeat at CA Osasuna, while Olympique de Marseille lost ground in France. UEFA.com looks back.

Real Madrid CF must make up a seven point gap to pacesetters FC Barcelona in Spain after suffering a surprise 1-0 setback at struggling CA Osasuna, while it proved a good weekend for leaders LOSC Lille Métropole in France as a number of their rivals dropped vital points. UEFA.com looks back at the latest action from around the continent.

Spain
It was a potentially decisive weekend in the Liga, with Barcelona picking up the pace and Madrid failing to follow suit. Josep Guardiola's titleholders beat Hércules CF 3-0 on Saturday to register a record-equalling 15th straight league win and go seven points clear at the summit. That cushion remains intact following Madrid's 1-0 defeat at fifth-bottom Osasuna on Sunday – only José Mourinho's third defeat in all competitions since arriving at the Santiago Bernabéu in the summer. "I can't fault the players as they did their job," said the Portuguese. "We didn't deserve to lose the three points."

France
Lille continue to look convincing championship material after stretching their unbeaten Ligue 1 run to 11 matches with a 1-0 derby defeat of northern neighbours RC Lens. "We're making good progress, but the road ahead is still long," explained Lille coach Rudi Garcia, whose charges enjoy a four-point cushion to Paris Saint-Germain FC, 2-1 victors at AC Arles-Avignon. Olympique Lyonnais are another three points back after they succumbed 2-1 at Valenciennes FC and there was frustration for fellow hopefuls Stade Rennais FC and Olympique de Marseille as well, the former losing 5-1 at FC Sochaux-Montbéliard and the latter drawing 0-0 at AS Monaco FC on Sunday.

Italy
Two of Serie A's most in-form talents shone again as AC Milan stayed four points clear of SSC Napoli following victories for both. The Rossoneri recorded a 2-0 win at Calcio Catania on Saturday and, once again, Zlatan Ibrahimović was prominent, provoking Robinho's opener before notching his 13th effort in 20 league outings, after Mark van Bommel had been sent off on his Serie A debut. "I think by winning here we made a statement," said Ibrahimović. The following day, leading scorer Edinson Cavani plundered a hat-trick in Napoli's 4-0 handling of UC Sampdoria, and there was similar joy for Giampaolo Pazzini as the FC Internazionale Milano newcomer struck twice to help the champions turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 success against US Città di Palermo.

Germany
Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways with a 3-0 victory at VfL Wolfsburg that maintained their handsome 11-point lead in Germany, with Bayer 04 Leverkusen still second after seeing off fifth-placed Hannover 96 2-0. "Today we played against the upcoming champions," said Wolfsburg coach Steve McClaren. "Dortmund were our strongest opponents all season." FC Bayern München are up to third, meanwhile, thanks to their 3-1 success at SV Werder Bremen, and bottom side VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach boosted their survival prospects by prevailing 1-0 at Eintracht Frankfurt for their second win in three games.

England
The FA Cup returned to centre stage in England and it proved a frustrating weekend for the underdogs, with Manchester United FC recovering from falling behind at Southampton FC to win 2-1 and Birmingham City FC turning a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 victory at home against second-tier Coventry City FC. "I wouldn't want to live through that too often with the stress levels," said Birmingham manager Alex McLeish. Arsenal FC had Cesc Fàbregas's late penalty winner to thank for seeing off third-division Huddersfield Town FC, but Notts County FC held Manchester City FC 1-1 and Crawley Town FC ensured a non-league presence in the fifth round by winning 1-0 at Torquay United FC.

Elsewhere
Fenerbahçe SK turned up the heat in the Turkish title race by handing leaders Trabzonspor AŞ – who finished with nine men to the hosts' ten – a 2-0 reverse that leaves them just two points ahead of Bursaspor and four clear of their conquerors on Sunday. There was a tightening at the top in Belgium too as frontrunners RSC Anderlecht could only draw 0-0 at KV Mechelen, allowing KRC Genk to close to within four points. As for PSV Eindhoven, they were thankful for Genero Zeefuik's 93rd-minute effort in a 2-1 defeat of bottom club Willem II that kept them ahead of FC Twente at the Eredivisie summit. In Scotland, finally, Celtic FC and Rangers FC won their way through to the League Cup final.

BERITA ISL 2011
Deltras Pecundangi Persela
29-01-2011

Pertandingan baru berjalan sekitar 13 menit, Deltras berhasil menjebol gawang Persela melalui gol Marcio Souza.

Sementara striker Deltras, yang juga mantan penggedor Persela, Marcio Souza terpilih menjadi man of the match.

Pique: Barca Harus Waspada Arsenal

Kawashima: It’s an amazing feeling

Few sides win major competitions without significant contributions from their goalkeepers. Japan custodian Eiji Kawashima proved the point on Saturday by playing an instrumental part in his side’s 1-0 win over Australia in the final of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011.

The hero of the Samurai Blue’s semi-final defeat of Korea Republic, the SK Lierse keeper was in outstanding form again at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, pulling off a string of excellent stops to pave the way for Japan’s fourth continental title.

After receiving a richly deserved Man of the Match award, the 27-year-old shot-stopper spoke exclusively to FIFA.com about his stunning showing against the Socceroos and the challenges that lie ahead for him and his country.

FIFA.com: Eiji, congratulations on your win. How does it feel to be the champions of Asia? Eiji Kawashima: It feels amazing. Winning this trophy is a wonderful achievement for us.

Australia played well and created lots of chances. What was the key to winning the game?
We went out there to play our usual game but they made it hard for us to do that. We had to stay patient. We held on and things worked out for us in the end.

The match looked destined for penalties. Were you ready for that?
Yes (laughs). It was on my mind, but luckily we managed to get that goal in the second half of extra time.

You denied Harry Kewell in a one-on-one situation with 18 minutes remaining in normal time. Was that the turning point of the match?
One goal can make all the difference in big games like this, so it was vital for us not to concede and I’m delighted we managed that today.

You saved two penalties in the semi-final shoot-out win over Korea Republic and you’ve put in another great performance here today. What is the secret to your current form?
It’s my job to stop the opposition from scoring and protect my goal, that’s what I try to do in every game. I always give everything I have and try to keep on improving, though I’m not entirely satisfied with my performance because there are things I still think I need to work on. That’s why I’ll be on the training ground as soon as I get back to my club tomorrow.

You were named Man of the Match for your superb display in the final. How much does that mean to you?
I’m happy to be Man of the Match but I wasn’t playing on my own out there. My team-mates all did really well too, and I’ll be sharing this award with them because it also belongs to them.

Four years ago you were understudy to Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi and now you are Japan’s No1. How do you feel about the progress you are making?
I took part in the last Asian Cup and I’ve seen for myself how Japanese football has developed. It’s a privilege to be in the national team, but I’m not the only one who wants to make football history in our country. It’s a goal all the players are working towards and we are thrilled to have achieved that by winning a fourth continental title for Japan.

What lessons have you learned from this tournament and your international career to date?
On a personal level I’ve gained in experience and I’m continuing to improve as a goalkeeper. That’s what makes this win such an important one for my team-mates and I. We can’t afford to stop now though, we have to keep doing what we’re doing.

Japan have produced some very fine goalkeepers in the last few years, namely Kawaguchi, Seigo Narazaki and yourself. What is the reason for that sustained excellence?
To be honest, I really don’t know. Maybe it’s got something to do with Japan’s successes in the Asian Cup. We’re part of the elite now and we’ve learned a lot in the process. Japanese keepers haven’t really made much of an impression in Europe, though, which is why I’m doing my very best to show what I can do and succeed there.

You are currently with Belgian club Lierse SK. Do you think winning the Asian Cup will help with your career?
Although the Asian Cup isn’t the same as playing in Europe, it’s been a really good tournament for me. Facing the Australians has also been a positive experience because they play a European-style game. We’re also going to be appearing in the Copa America this year and I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from that too.

Japan will also play in the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013, which you’ll obviously be hoping to take part in.
Asian football is developing fast and as a team we’ve come on a lot in this competition. We need to keep moving forward, though. It will be fantastic to take part in the Confederations Cup and pit our wits against the champions from the other continents. It’ll give us another chance to acquire yet more experience.

Schwarzer: Title would boost Aussie game

(FIFA.com) Friday 28 January 2011

Long-serving Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has achieved much in the game over nearly two decades at the highest level, but this weekend promises to be extra special. Nearly 18 years after making his international debut, the dependable custodian will become Australia’s most-capped player overhauling the record of 87 appearances held by former captain Alex Tobin.

Seldom has such a rich reward been on offer as Australia prepare to face Japan in the AFC Asian Cup final, seeking to be crowned continental kings for the first time since joining the Asian Football Confederation in 2006. The match at the Khalifa stadium in Doha may represent the last opportunity for the evergreen 38-year-old shotstopper to collect silverware.

Australia qualified for the final with an impressive defensive record of just one goal conceded in their five matches and the contribution of Schwarzer has been a key component. Ahead of one of the most significant games of his glittering career Schwarzer tells FIFA.com of his experiences at Qatar 2011, what his expectations are for the match and what winning would mean for the game Down Under.

FIFA.com: The last two matches produced amazing wins, albeit for different reasons, 1-0 in extra time against holders Iraq and 6-0 in the semi-final over Uzbekistan. How do these two matches rate in your Socceroo career?
Mark Schwarzer:
These are both huge events, being the quarter-final and semi-final of a continental title. Also there is the rivalry between us and Iraq dating back to 2007 [Iraq defeated Australia in a group match in the Asian Cup] and that is something special. To get a win against the current holders was a great satisfaction but also part of the process for us, which is to take each game as it comes.

The team seems to be very cohesive with a strong spirit despite a relatively new coach in Holger Osieck, and also some new faces in the squad. Is that something you have felt?
Without a doubt. We have worked very hard on being switched on and also with what is demanded of us by the coach. We have a very knowledgeable manager who is well-travelled with a lot of experience with players from many different countries. He has slipped into the role very easily. He is very enthusiastic and very energetic and that has been transferred to the players as well.
We want to do it for Australia and do it for football back in Australia.
Schwarzer is hoping to win the AFC Asian Cup

You have achieved many personal playing records and now you are set to be Australia’s most capped player. What kind of honour is that?
It is a huge honour. It is the icing on the cake. I think it is one of those things that you try not to think too much about. You try and perform and do you job in each match which is the most important aspect. It’s one of those things that you might fully appreciate later on and then it becomes even more enjoyable. But don’t get me wrong I’m fully aware of the honour that goes with it and I’m deeply honoured.

You are taking the mantle of most-capped Socceroo from former captain Alex Tobin whom you played alongside at the start of your career. Did you ever envisage that?
No, not at all. When you are young I don’t think you ever look beyond your next game. In regards Alex, I have the utmost respect for him as a person and a player and he is a great ambassador for the game.

Can you remember much about your debut against Canada in a FIFA World Cup™ qualifier way back in 1993?
I remember most of my games for the Socceroos, if not all of them. It is a long time ago now, but it was a tremendous moment for me.

Do you have any plans regarding your playing future at the moment? I had a lot of discussions with the manager when he was first appointed and he was adamant that he wanted me to be involved, which I was delighted with. I have no aspirations at this point in time to stop playing and there is no reason to stop playing unless the manager is going to say he wants to look at different prospects. As long as I feel fit enough and am playing well enough to warrant selection, and the manager selects me, then I want to still play.

Australia has a good record against Japan recently. Does that give you extra confidence for the final?
I think it is quite irrelevant because when you are talking about a final it’s a one-off and its all about the 90 minutes, or 120 minutes potentially. It’s all about the day, who deals with the pressure better than the other and that is what it will come down to. Japan are a very good side and they deserve to be in the final. They have some very good individuals and are playing well as a team so it will be very tough for us. We need to play our game and we also have good individuals and have grown as a team throughout the tournament.

Though Australia has won the Oceania crown before, winning this would rank as Australia’s biggest prize, which must be exciting...Any opportunity to win a major trophy is huge. This is why we have committed ourselves and we were all desperate to be involved in the Asian Cup. We as players first and foremost love representing Australia and we want to do it for Australia and do it for football back in Australia. Of course there is personal ambition and satisfaction but also we ultimately want to do it for the game back home and for future generations.

When you buy a new smartphone, is the first thing you look at what the specific absorption rate (SAR) is of the device you’re interesting in spending cash on? Me neither, but according to some health organizations, we should be paying attention to mobile phone radiation.

review and searching new produc from lexus hp 2011
Rather than try and convince people to stop using their smartphones for phone calls (ain’t gonna happen), Israeli startup tawkon has developed applications that let people minimize exposure to cellular radiation while they continue using their mobile phones.

Essentially, tawkon monitors and analyzes your mobile phone’s radiation using proprietary technology, enabling you to “talk on” as usual and receive prompts to avoid radiation when you really need to. According to the company, radiation levels emitted from mobile phones can fluctuate significantly during a call, due to a variety of dynamic factors.

Tawkon alerts users when those radiation levels cross a predefined threshold, and offers suggestions to reduce exposure, based on real-time environment and usage factors.

Apple has opted to reject the somewhat controversial application – for whatever reason – and hasn’t communicated with the startup in many months. The company does have applications for BlackBerry devices, and recently launched an Android-compatible version.

Now, the company is releasing a “limited edition beta” version specifically designed for Google’s Nexus S
Its timing is impeccable – starting next month, the City of San Francisco’s cell phone right-to-know ordinance (PDF) goes into effect, requiring retailers to disclose Specific Absorption Rate values for cell phones

Flower show with a touch of florists' entrepreneurship lures visitors in Agartala

2011-01-23 16:10:00

Admirers of colourful and fragrant flowers thronged the Tripura Legislative Assembly Garden to witness the annual flower show-cum-competition for floriculturists here on Saturday.

The flowers, which bloom during the winter season were put on display at this show held with an aim to encourage people to take more interest in floriculture and to make Agartala city green and clean.

The organisers said that such kind of exhibitions make flowers popular among the masses as well as the classes which in turn act as a catalyst for the youth of the region engaged in floriculture.

"We promote this as an entrepreneurship, as a business and it's a very good thing. In the last four to five years, it has developed in such a way that in our social functions all the flowers earlier came from Kolkata," said Pabitra Kar, an organiser of the Flower Show.

"But nowadays, it doesn't come from Kolkata, our Agartala market is covered by our local entrepreneurs and they are mostly the unemployed educated youth. For them it is a very good development," he added.

This year's edition boasts of over 250 varieties of vibrant and colourful flowers like dahlia, gerbera, marigold, chrysanthemum, orchid and anthodium.n their part, the visitors after having a look at the different varieties displayed said the exhibition is worth seeing.

"We came to see flowers. There are different varieties of flowers like marigold, petunia, pansy and different varieties of chrysanthemum. This exhibition is worthy to see and moreover, prizes are also being given," said Rina, a visitor.

The four-day long event has been organised by the Flower Lovers Association of Agartala. (ANI)

Positive thinking is key: Sung-yeung
Sunday, 23 January 2011 14:57
Doha: Ki Sung-yueng is hoping the power of positive thinking will help Korea Republic recover from their gruelling 120-minute battle with Iran as their focus shifts to their AFC Asian Cup semi-final encounter with Japan.

The Koreans have only two full days to recover from the exertions of their physically demanding 1-0 win over Afshin Ghotbi’s team but the 21-year-old Celtic midfielder is confident his team can be ready for the meeting with their old rivals.

“We have to just rest well, have to eat well and prepare mentally,” he said.

“If we keep thinking we are tired, then we will be tired. But we have to think that we will be okay and then we will be fine.

“It’s not going to be easy. We don’t have enough time to have a rest but we will prepare mentally very well and also it’s going to be an interesting game against Japan.

“Each team knows each other very well. They normally pass very well in midfield and they have good attackers but I think they have problems with their defence. We have to watch ourselves and prepare well for the next game.”

Ki’s thoughts were backed up by veteran defender Lee Young-pyo, who felt his Korean team-mates proved themselves against a physically demanding Iran side.

“The game was very, very tough game, from the first minute until the 120th minute,” said the 33-year-old, who spent last season with Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal.

“Before the game everyone wanted to know who was the strongest between Iran and South Korea and now everyone knows who was the strongest,” continued the former Tottenham Hotspur, Borussia Dortmund and PSV Eindhoven left-back.

“All four teams in the semi-finals will be physically very tired. We have many Europe-based players who are playing big games every few days, Champions League and cup competitions.

“Also, in Korea the K-League players, when they were young, they can play every day over three or four weeks. We know when we only have a short period to recover but we know what to do. I don’t want to worry about it.”

asian cup 2011 qatar : Japan 3-2 Qatar

Friday, January 21, 2011

Doha: Masahiko Inoha’s last-minute goal sent 10-man Japan through to semi-finals of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011™ at the expense of hosts Qatar as the Samurai Blue edged a thrilling match 3-2 at Al Gharafa Stadium on Friday.

Qatar had made a dream start when Sebastian Soria opened the scoring in the 12th minute but Shinji Kagawa levelled just before the half hour.

Maya Yoshida was shown a second yellow in the 63rd minute for a foul on Yuesf Ahmed and substitute Fabio Cesar put Bruno Metsu’s side ahead from the resulting free-kick.

But Japan once again battled back with Kagawa grabbing his second before Inoha swept home in the 89th minute to seal a memorable victory for Japan.

Buoyed by a vocal home support it was the Qataris who were first to threaten as Soria saw his shot hit a defender but the ball fell kindly for Mohamed El Sayed, who slid in to stab an effort that Eiji Kawashima did well to deny.

But the Lierse SK shot-stopper was unable to prevent the hosts from opening the scoring in 12th minute through a fine individual goal from Soria.

The Uruguay-born striker expertly sprung the offside trap to race down the wing before cutting into the area where he wrong-footed defender Inoha before slotting beyond Kawashima.

But Japan managed to get themselves back on level terms in the 28th minute when Shinji Okazaki delivered a cross towards the far post where Kagawa was waiting to nod in.

Qatar keeper Qasem Burhan did well to prevent Japan then taking the lead in the 35th minute when he dived to push away a low drive from skipper Makoto Hasebe, before Kagawa fired wide as Alberto Zaccheroni’s side finished the half strongly.

They picked up where they left off when the second period got underway as Okazaki flicked a header just wide of the post before Yuto Nagamoto shot straight into the hands of Burhan.

But things took a turn for the worse for Japan in the 63rd minute when Yoshida needlessly took the legs of Yusef Ahmed on the right of the box - earning himself a second yellow card in the process - and from the resulting free-kick Fabio Cesar curled a low effort that crept in at Kawashima’s near post.

The Japanese, though, did not let their heads drop and showed great resolve to pull themselves level seven minutes later when Kagawa got the better of Mesaad Ali inside the area before driving a shot beyond Burhan.

From then on the game was wide open as Soria fired a shot into the side-netting in the 86th minute before Keisuke Honda sent a free-kick over the bar.

But it was Japan that clinched victory at the death when Kagawa received the ball just inside the area, turned his marker and though he was brought down by Khaled Muftah, Inoha was on hand to stroke the loose ball into the net.  www.the-afc.com

Barcelona through despite defeat

(PA) Thursday 20 January 2011

Barcelona survived an almighty scare against Real Betis to book their place in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey after a 6-3 aggregate victory.
Pep Guardiola's side looked assured of their place in the last four after cruising to a 5-0 win in the first leg, but were quickly on the rack tonight as two goals in the opening seven minutes from Jorge Molina set second-tier Betis on the way to a 3-1 win. The result brought an end to Barcelona's record run of 28 games unbeaten.
The start was a humiliating one for a Barcelona team which, while weakened, still boasted the likes of Lionel Messi, Xavi, Javier Mascherano and Gerard Pique. And Messi it was who restored some Catalan pride seven minutes before the break as he fired home to reduce the deficit and leave Betis needing to score seven goals to progress.
In the end the hosts could manage just one more goal, through Arzu on the stroke of half-time, but Barcelona's humiliation was not yet quite complete, with Messi's uncharacteristic penalty miss in the second period typifying a poor display by the Primera Division leaders.
In the night's other quarter-final second leg, Almeria beat Deportivo La Coruna 3-2 to complete a 4-2 aggregate win and secure their place in the final four for the first time. Corona opened the scoring for Almeria in the 19th minute while Albert Crusat made it 2-0 just 60 seconds later.
Depor fought back onto level terms through Pablo Alverez's penalty two minutes before the break and Adrian Lopez's header seven minutes after the restart. But Henok Goitom's penalty put Almeria out of sight in the 55th minute to secure a semi-final berth against Barcelona. fifa.com

Easy does it for Iran, Iraq

asian cup 2011 update

(FIFA.com) Wednesday 19 January 2011

Defending champions Iraq completed the quarter-final line-up at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011 when they downed Korea DPR 1-0 to secure second place in Group D. Finishing above them were neighbours Iran, who maintained their 100 per cent record with a comprehensive defeat of United Arab Emirates.
The 2007 winners now go forward to meet Australia in a potentially intriguing last-eight tie, while the Iranians take on Korea Republic, who finished second in Group C behind the Socceroos.
The matchIraq 1-0 Korea DPR, Ahmed bin Ali Stadium, Al Rayyan
Goal: Karrar Jassim 22Having lost to Iran and earned a fortunate win over UAE, the holders were anxious to rekindle the spirit that swept them to the continental title four years ago. Exhibiting their superiority from the off, the Iraqis almost took the lead on 17 minutes when Mustafa Karim struck the bar from a corner. They were not to be denied for long, however, with Jassim tucking the ball home after Korea DPR goalkeeper Ri Myong Guk had parried Mustafa Karim’s shot. Easing off in the second half, Wolfgang Sidka’s men allowed their opponents back into contention. Yet despite the odd scare for keeper Mohammed Gassid, they held on for a welcome triumph.
The surpriseIran 3-0 United Arab Emirates, Qatar SC Stadium, Doha
Goals: Arash Afshin 70, Mohammad Nouri 83, Walid Abbas 90 ogWith his side having already secured top spot in the section, Iran coach Afshin Ghotbi rang the changes for their final group outing, giving his second string a run out. Despite needing a win to have any chance of going through, UAE failed to muster much of a threat in a cagey encounter and fell behind when Afshin struck 20 minutes from time. Latching on to a fine Khosro Heydari pass, Nouri doubled their advantage before Walid Abbas compounded the Emirati side’s misery by putting through his own net in stoppage time.
The starKarrar Jassim, IraqThe midfielder’s match-winning goal was not the only highlight of his fine all-round display against the North Koreans.  A star with Al Wakra in the Qatari league, Jassim also teed up Mustafa Karim for a first-half header that came back off the bar and nearly added to his account with two dangerous drives after the interval.
The stat
9 -
The number of points Iran amassed in the group stage after winning all three of their games, the only team to do so at Qatar 2011. Nine was also the number of changes their coach Afshin Ghotbi made for the meeting with UAE.
Talking pointsA hard knockYounis Mahmoud missed out on the celebrations that followed the only goal of Iraq’s win over Korea DPR. While team-mate Karrar was firing his side to another three points, the striker, who plays his club football for Al Gharrafa in Qatar, was writhing in pain on the ground, the result of a tackle by Ri Kwang Chon.
Firing blanksKorea DPR and United Arab Emirates have not one but two things in common. As well as exiting the competition without winning a game, the departing duo both failed to score, having cancelled each other out in a goalless draw and then coming up short in respective defeats to Iran and Iraq.
Double troubleUAE defender Walid Abbas ensured his name would go down in tournament history when he scored his second own goal of the group phase. As well as scoring at the wrong end against the Iranians, the Al Shabab man suffered the same fate in the 1-0 loss to Iraq.
What they said“I am very happy with our third straight win and with the way we’ve played, especially against UAE, with a lot of new players coming in for their first international. I'm really looking forward to playing Korea Republic in the next round. I think it will be a great match,” Afshin Ghotbi, Iran coach.
“We deserved our win today. The important thing is that we’ve now got the opportunity to play Australia in the quarters. We can celebrate victory today but we’ll have to start getting ready tomorrow. I’ve got a lot of confidence in this team and I feel we can go all the way,” Wolfgang Sidka, Iraq coach.

Hands-on With the EFUN Nextbook Next3 Tablet

Last week at CES we saw a lot of tablets and I met with a lot of tablet makers. I was fascinated by the differing philosophies among these companies. While some preferred to wait and release their tablets when Google finally released Honeycomb, others were looking to get to market faster and were just fine with sending tablets bearing Android 2.2 or even 2.1 into the world. One such company representing the second stance was EFUN, makers of the Nextbook tablets.
The Nextbook Next3, which recently arrived in our offices, resembles a lot of the Android tablets we’ve seen in the past 18 months or so since this recent slate craze began. What sets it apart is its size — 8.4-inches instead of the more popular 7 or 10-ish — but otherwise the plastic chassis and the resistive screen are all too familiar. At $299 it’s certainly less expensive than the iPads and Galaxy Tabs of the world (unsubsidized, anyway), but is it worth a look?
On the design front the Next3 is somewhat non-descript. The glossy black chassis is not plain, but instead has flecks of metallic blue that sparkle a bit in the light. It’s not something a Twilight vampire would envy, just a bit of flair to an otherwise plain design. The thing I noticed most was the lack of buttons. There are only two on the right side — up and down — and those are for turning pages in the eReader apps or paging through files or media, such as in the photo viewer. Unlike most Android devices, there’s no Home, Back, Menu or Search buttons. Instead, Home, Back and Menu are found on screen (sometimes accompanied by Search) in most apps, but they’re not always visible.
I realize that this is a trend several hardware manufacturers are going toward, and I’d like to take this moment to ask them to stop. Having physical buttons may offend some aesthetically, but they’re very useful. Especially in instances where an app stops working or the display stops responding to taps. As happened several times when using the Next3. Of course, there is always the chance that the entire system is frozen and it needs a hard reset. However, the Back or Home button would have sufficed for most of the problems I encountered.
Other than lack of buttons, the main cause of frustration was the Next3′s screen. The 8.4-inch display is resistive, not capacitive touch enabled. This doesn’t automatically indicate a terrible screen, and this model is definitely easier to use than the Augen Gentouch78. Still, the display wasn’t very responsive to touch from the pad of our fingers. Using a fingernail or the included stylus was better, but even then we had to press far too hard at times to get the tablet to register the input. Also, no matter how many times I calibrated it, I couldn’t get the touch sensitivity to be as accurate as I needed to to tap small icons or lines of text.
The 800 x 600 resolution on the display may be too low for some, but I found it plenty big enough for surfing the web and reading eBooks. Also, unlike many of the 7-inch tablets we’ve seen recently, the Next3 has a 4:3 aspect ratio. This makes sense for a larger tablet, and offers more vertical pixels in landscape mode. The screen’s vertical viewing angles aren’t very wide, but enough to share the screen with a friend. Horizontal angles are better, which means you can prop it up on a nearby table and watch video with little problem.
Performance-wise, the Next3 had few problems. The dual-core ARM processor isn’t blazingly fast, but it looks like the manufacturer didn’t add anything on the software side to slow the system down. When taps registered, the system responded right away. When typing on the on-screen keyboard, I didn’t have to wait for the system to catch up with me. The included standard-def video played without hitching, and SD YouTube videos were similarly smooth when the connection was good. The Wi-Fi on board isn’t very strong, but when close to the router websites downloaded in good time.
Given this, we were surprised that we couldn’t get Angry Birds to work correctly. It never did load fully, just showed a blank or static screen and sometimes played the theme music. This is when a Home button would have been useful. To get out of this never-ending loop, I had to shut down the tablet completely.
If you’ve been following tablet news and developments at all it will come as no surprise that the Next3 doesn’t come with the official Google Market on board, nor some other core Google apps just as Gmail and Maps. (There is an email app, though.) Instead, EFUN included the AndAppStore, a third-party market that acts just like the Google Market. Users can browse for apps within categories, download, and install right from the AndAppStore app, just as with the Google Market. The selection is not as vast, though. There look to be under a thousand apps instead of the over 10,000 available to certified Google devices.
The Next3 comes with the standard Android apps pre-loaded, plus the Borders app (with 25 free eBooks already on the tablet). Most consumers will get their first look at the Nextbook Next3 in a Borders store, as that’s one of the retail outlets set to carry it.
If you see the Next3 in the store, should you buy it? It’s $200 less than the least expensive iPad, after all. Still, $299 is a lot to pay for a basic tablet. And while the Next3 certainly doesn’t suffer from all the same drawbacks as other lower-tier tablets we’ve seen, it also doesn’t offer anything beyond stock Android. Plus, for some, the resistive touchscreen is a dealbreaker.
It may take some patience, but I recommend waiting for a newer crop of tablets to come to market before making the decision to spend your money on this one.http://blog.laptopmag.com
