Match Preview : An England goalkeeper getting caught out by a long- range shot at a World Cup is nothing new, so Karen Bardsley joined good company last Monday evening.

Mexico’s Monica Ocampo saw her speculative effort from distance beat the despairing dive of the England No. 1, as all of the good work that Hope Powell’s side had put in until then was undone.

The reward for that earlier positivity had come in the form of Fara Williams’ looping header but, floored by an equaliser which could be attributed to a goalkeeper’s lack of concentration, England eventually had to settle for a 1-1 draw against a side from the Americas in their opening match of the tournament.
“It's definitely a must-win game, three points will set us up nicely going into the [last group] game against Japan,” said Williams, a 27-year-old midfielder for Everton who has 93 caps for her country, scoring 35 goals.

“If you look at all the groups and all the games it's mostly one goal that has won it. Goals will be important, but first of all, getting the three points is the most important and if it's 1-0 to us then we will take that.”

Playing against a New Zealand team which recorded an 8-0 semi-final victory and an 11-0 final win during their qualifying tournament, then the prospect of a one-goal margin of victory should surely see England snap several hands off.

“I don't think there is a team as good as New Zealand for the work-rate they put in for 90 minutes,” continued Williams.

“They are going to do that on Friday and it will make it difficult for us.”

With, as Williams states, this match inserted firmly into the ‘must-win’ column for England, Powell may be tempted into making changes, meaning that every one of the 21-strong squad will need to be ready, especially with Williams and skipper Faye White –
“I struggled in the last 10 minutes which was expected," continued Williams. “I'm just glad I made it through the 90 minutes.”

England will be too, and will be looking for another strong performance from their all-action midfielder, as well as hoping that Eni Aluko can take any chances that fall her way, unlike on Monday.
A win would inject some new hope into Powell’s side, and allow them to get over the disappointment of Mexico should they still be feeling it.

Regardless of their big wins in qualifying, New Zealand are facing tougher opposition here, and England can earn the victory that they so crave – a win that would go a long way towards qualification for the latter stages.

As far as they are concerned, then the comparisons with recent English World Cups will hopefully end there.

Padang - Persija Jakarta harus menerima kenyataan pahit tersungkur di Padang, setelah dikalahkan tuan rumah Semen Padang (SP) 1-0 pada laga lanjutan Djarum Indonesia Super League (DISL) 2010/2011 di Stadion H Agus Salim, Padang, Selasa (26/12). Kemenangan ini sekaligus memecahkan rekor tak terkalahkan Persija Jakarta di kompetisi DISL 2010/2011. Gol tunggal SP diciptakan Hengki Ardiles.

Dengan kemenangan ini, SP juga sukses mempertahankan rekor tak terkalahkan. Kini tinggal SP dan pemuncak sementara klasemen DISL, Persipura Jayapura yang belum pernah terkalahkan.

Tambahan tiga poin juga membuat tim besutan Nil Maizar ini berhasil merangsek ke posisi empat klasemen sementara dengan torehan 10 poin dari 4 laga yang telah dilakoni. Bagi Persija, kekalahan ini tetap tak menggusur posisi mereka di peringkat 3 klasemen sementara. Tim besutan Rahmad Darmawan ini juga mengoleksi 10 poin. Hanya saja Persija telah melakoni 5 pertandingan dan unggul produktivitas meski memiliki selisih gol sama dengan SP

SP memang tampil dominan sejak peluit dimulainya pertandingan. Kabau Sirah juga tampil dengan determinasi tinggi. Namun, justru Persija yang lebih dulu mengancam. Saat pertandingan memasuki menit ke-24, M Ilham melepaskan tandukan memanfaatkan umpan silang Amarzukih. Sayangnya, tandukan Ilham masih terlalu lemah.

Semen Padang membalas di menit 28. Aksi menawan Edward Wilson Junior sempat mengancam gawang Hendro Kartiko. Beruntung, tembakan keras penyerang Liberia ini di sisi kiri kotak penalti Persija masih melambung.

Stadion H Agus Salim baru bergemuruh saat Semen Padang berhasil mencetak gol cantik di menit 35. Bek kanan Hengki berhasil merangsek ke kotak penalti Persija setelah sebelumnya melakukan kerjasama satu dua dengan Saktiawan Sinaga.

Saktiawan memberikan umpan dengan dada yang langsung disusul dengan tembakan keras Hengki yang gagal dibendung Hendro Kartiko. Kabau Sirah sementara unggul 1-0 atas tim ibukota. Ini menjadi gol perdana Hengki musim ini. Keunggulan Semen Padang bertahan hingga turun minum.

Memasuki babak kedua, Semen Padang tetap tampil ofensif, sedangkan Persija tak kalah ofensif guna mengejar ketertinggalan. Macan Kemayoran berpeluang menyamakan kedudukan lewat tendangan bebas Oliver Makor di menit 53. Sayangnya, bola masih terlalu lemah sehingga dengan mudah dikuasai Samsidar.

Sebaliknya, Semen Padang hampir menggandakan keunggulan di menit 56 andai tendangan Ellie Aiboy tak membentur mistar gawang Hendro Kartiko. Persija sebenarnya berhasil menjebol gawang Semen Padang di menit 88 lewat aksi Bambang Pamungkas. Namun, asisten wasit telah mengangkat bendera sebagai tanda pemain Persija dalam posisi off-side. Sempat terjadi protes keras dari kubu Persija yang menganggap Bepe tidak dalam posisi off-side.

Satu menit kemudian giliran gol Kabau Sirah yang dianulir wasit. Gol Edward Wilson dianulir setelah salah satu pemain Kabau Sirah off-side. Selama tiga menit tambahan waktu skor 1-0 ini tak berubah.

Captain and centre-back Ryan Nelsen is undoubtedly the highest profile and best credentialed member of the squad. The resolute defender has been a regular at Blackburn Rovers for a number of years, and is the only New Zealander to achieve such longevity in the English Premier League. At the other end of the pitch, the All Whites have a number of key attacking options led by the prolific Shane Smeltz. Oceania Player of the Year and Australian A-League top-scorer Smeltz has an all-round finishing ability, and is deadly in the air or with his feet. Celtic target-man Chris Killen is a perfect foil for Smeltz, while Fallon and teenage giant Chris Wood both possess quality aerial ability.

The coach
Ricki Herbert is one of New Zealand football’s most-famous figures, having been a regular member of the Spain ’82 squad and then becoming one of the first Kiwis to play in England which he did with Wolverhampton Wanderers. After assuming the reins of the national team in 2005, Herbert has for several seasons also been the coach of New Zealand’s only professional club, Wellington Phoenix who compete in the A-League. Well regarded across both New Zealand and Australia, Herbert has formed the All Whites into a solid working unit who produce consistent performances.
