AS Roma 2-3 Shakhtar Donetsk All Goals Highlights, 16-02-2011

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Roma were made to pay for 15 minutes of madness late in the first half as Shakhtar Donetsk recorded a deserved 3-2 away win in the Champions League last 16 first leg clash at the Olimpico.

Simone Perrotta's header deflected in off Razvan Rat for the Giallorossi to gain the lead, but by half-time they were 3-1 down thanks to goals by Jadson, Douglas Costa and Luiz Adriano. Jeremy Menez pulled one back on the hour, but Roma now face a tough task to turn the tie around.
After a series of chances at both ends, it appeared only a matter of time before somebody broke the deadlock, and Roma did so in the 28th minute when Rodrigo Taddei lifted a pass to the far post, and when Simone Perrotta headed back towards the near post, Razvan Rat bundled the ball into his own net.

But before the Giallorossi could revel in their advantage, they had lost it. Burdisso only half cleared an attack immediately from the kick-off and Jadson sent in a shot from range which deflected off Daniele De Rossi and left Doni flat-footed.

Shakhtar threatened more goals, and took the lead in the 36th minute when Douglas Costa ran at Perrotta and De Rossi before sending a delightful left-foot shot across Doni and into the far corner.

It only got worse for Roma before half-time, as Riise stumbled on a regulation clearance and Douglas Costa was able to take the ball on and square for the unmarked Luiz Adriano to slip the ball in off Doni to send the Ukrainian supporters into raptures.
Roma hit back just after the hour mark when Jeremy Menez fired home superbly from just outside the area with Andriy Pyatov stood helpless.

The Giallorossi continued to knock at the door in the search for an equaliser, but Shakhtar remained dangerous on the break and eventually settled for seeing out the game with their lead intact.

The 3-2 scoreline gives the Giallorossi a mountain to climb in the return leg at the Donbass Arena on March 8. With a near-imperious home record, a first leg lead, and three away goals in their favour, the Miners are now huge favourites to progress to the quarter-finals. (goal)
